Two-state burglary ring busted | News
ALBANY, GA- Six people are in jail charged with breaking into more than 50 cars in three counties and two states. Some of the stolen items including a set of golf clubs, guitar, and a gun have been recovered.
But police say they are searching through a popular internet auction site for the rest.
Investigators say a rash of burglaries started about two months ago. Items stolen include golf clubs, GPS devices, credit cards, purses, a refrigerator, and prescription meds. Even a badge and gun from a Leon County law officer were recovered.
Police say a group of six young adults broke into cars in Thomasville, Cairo, and Tallahassee.
"Also during the course of our investigation we learned that a church in the Pine Park community here in Grady County had been burglarized. Some property has been recovered. Not all of the items have been recovered yet," said Grady County Investigator Lt. Steve Clark.
Investigators say they tried to sell the stolen items like purses, golf clubs, and GPS systems online.
"One of these individuals actually had an Ebay account and might have been marketing these items through Ebay."
The Thomas County Sheriff's Office is now working to return all the stolen property.
"We are contacting the owners of the property as best we can. Some we were able to identify because we found prescription bottles with their names on them. Some because the offenders actually gave us descriptions of the houses where they went into the cars at," said Lt. Tim Watkins, Thomas County Investigator.
Charged in the case are 22-year old Jeremy Thompson and Alex Spivey, 20-year old Brittany Smith, 21-year old Samantha Balthrop, and 18-year old Danielle Smith and Tiffany Spears.
Investigators say you should take steps to avoid becoming a victim of theft.
"The biggest deterrent is don't leave anything of value in your car because these people, just like these individuals, they walk down the road, if they look in your car and there's nothing that draws them to it, they're not going to mess with it."
Investigators say the refrigerator, lamp, and cleaning supplies stolen from the Grady County church have all been recovered.
The suspects are charged with burglary, entering auto, and theft by taking in Georgia, but several other charges in Florida are still pending.
Thompson is from Thomas County, and the other five are from Grady County.
